The Seasons

Ladbroke Hall, London 2024

Ladbroke Hall is a major new arts venue in Notting Hill. This ambitious restoration and rebuilding project contains Carpenter’s Workshop galleries devoted to art and design, a garden, and music and theatre performance spaces, including jazz every Friday night. Opening 27 September 2023, the new restaurant at Ladbroke Hall reveals the large paintings by Christopher commissioned for the central space. The restaurant was designed by Vincenzo de Cotiis. The chef is the renowned Emanuele Pollini.

The Seasons is a group of four paintings: LeafRoseWheat and Snow, whose titles represent the developing phases of the year. Together they make a sequence within the classic repertoire of modern painting - like visual poems of colour, light and time. The large windows to the north and south are a striking feature of the room bringing natural light to the walls throughout the day, meaning that season by season as the year progresses, their appearance will be constantly changing. As for the order in which they are hung, while i was working this phrase came to mind: “First the leaf, then the rose, next the wheat and last the snow”.
